I believe that Piazzolla's place is with the great musicians of the 20th century, like Gershwin, who have been able to convey into their compositions, in an absolutely original way, the musical currents of their time, thus creating a personal and highly distinctive style. If you happen to listen for the first time to one of his pieces, you understand immediately that it's by Piazzolla. His melodies are unique, yearning. And so is the rhythm, of which we have already said. Astor was a truly complete musician, who combined an extraordinary inventive talent with an exceptional interpretative technique, the fruit of many years of hard study and work. When I listened to him for the first time I thought of comparing him to Bartók. While speaking with him later on, he told me that in Paris, Bartók had been one of the main elements of his formation.
Certamente, come potrei dimenticarlo? Fu nel luglio 1969 a Buenos Aires. Mi trovavo in America Latina per una tournée in diversi Paesi insieme al pianista Alfredo Rossi. E Nestor Panik, un violista argentino mio amico, che suonava con Astor, ci faceva da guida notturna nei i locali di tango tradizionale. Ricordo ad esempio che ci portò a sentire Francini e il suo gruppo. A me il tango piaceva, ma Piazzolla lo conoscevo solo di nome, non avevo mai ascoltato un suo pezzo. Un giorno Panik ci disse: «Stasera andiamo a sentire qualcosa di veramente speciale». E così ci portò al "Michelangelo", dove Piazzolla suonava. Il locale era affollatissimo. La gente fumava, beveva, parlava ad alta voce. Ad un certo punto, si fece buio in sala e sul palco apparve lui, Piazzolla, con il suo magico.
