William Carter - Sor Late Works - Gramophone

The follow-up disc to Carter's set of Spanish composer and virtuoso Fernando Sor's early works is available both as a hybrid SACD (offering DSD 5.1-channel or stereo, plus CD-quality with HDCD) and in a variety of download formats.

It's a beautifully simple and uncluttered recording. There's a close focus on the solo instrument and the guitarist's technique, and the 5.1-channel version benefits from the extra space and sense of acoustic. The intricacies of the playing are wonderfully captured and the result is delicacy and concentration, making this just about as near-perfect a recording as I've heard.
