Catherine King studied at Cambridge and the Guildhall in London. She appears regularly as a soloist in Britain, on the continent and in the USA, performing repertoire from Bach and Handel to Elgar and Tippett, and is well known as a versatile early music specialist. Contemporary music performances include new works with Sing Circle and the Rose Consort, as well as premières of specially commissioned songs performed on BBC Radio 3 and CD. Recordings include CDs and broadcasts with Jacob Heringman, pianist Wayne Marshall, Gothic Voices, fretwork, Virelai, the New London Consort and the Taverner Consort. Her latest recording, on the Virgin label, is of songs by Samuel Barber.
The American lutenist Jacob Heringman studied with Jakob Lindberg at the Royal College of Music in London, and later with Pat O'Brien in New York. Based in England since 1987, he is in great demand as a soloist, song accompanist and ensemble player, performing regularly throughout Europe and North and South America and making many CD and radio recordings with leading English ensembles, including the Dufay Collective, the Musicians of the Globe, the New London Consort and Virelai. His first solo CD, for ASV, was released in 1997. More solo discs are scheduled for 1999-2000 on the DGM label, as well as a CD for Decca of lute songs with Barbara Bonney.
Catherine King and Jacob Heringman have made numerous appearances together in festivals throughout Europe, as well as broadcasting frequently for the BBC and for WDR in Cologne. In 1999 the duo will appear in the Bruges Festival, and at the South Bank Early Music Festival in London. The duo has recorded for Naxos (with the Rose Consort of Viols) and for Virgin (with Virelai). Their first CD purely as a duo (of songs by Alonso Mudarra) has met with great acclaim since ASV released it in September 1997. A second CD of Spanish and Portuguese songs by Luis Milán was released in August of 1998. In addition to performing lute songs of the renaissance and early baroque periods, the duo has championed the cause of the contemporary lute song, attracting several new commissions by British and American composers.
