Clara Sanabras

Clara Sanabras was born in rainy Normandy, grew up in sunny Barcelona and became a real Londoner sometime during the 1990s as a result of having moved to Walthamstow, where she could enjoy the rain once again.

As the daughter of musicians, she began studying music at the age of six, gained her piano and singing diplomas at the Conservatori del Liceu in Barcelona and came to London in 1994 to study singing and lute at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. During her studies she won the John Ireland Song Competition, the ENO's 1998 Stephen Arlen Award and the “Tchaikovsky Prize” at the Concurso Juventudes Musicales de España.

Since then, Clara has sung with Kent Opera, Dartington Opera and in 1999 she joined The Harp Consort with whom she has recorded several projects as well as touring around Europe, Japan & Mexico. She has also performed and recorded with Palladians, The New London Consort, Charivari Agréable, The Purcell Quartet, Romanesca, The Martin Best Ensemble and her own medieval group Tintagel. Clara has given recitals accompanying herself to the lute in 14th to 17th century solo repertoire including two solo BBC broadcast concerts for the Young Artists' Forum Series at Turner Sims Hall and for Music Restor'd at Duke's Hall (RAMD).

In recent years, she has been involved in numerous theatre projects including “Two Noble Kinsmen” (dir. Tim Carroll) and “The Honest Whore” at the New Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, taught at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, received the Arts Council Award for an Early Music Project and performed at La Scala in Milan.
