Robert King - director
Robert King is one of Europe's leading baroque conductors/directors. Born in 1960, he was a boy chorister with the world-famous Choir of St. John's College, Cambridge, and he returned to Cambridge to read for his music degree, founding the baroque orchestra The King's Consort in 1980. With his orchestras he has performed in almost every European country, twice at the Proms, and is an especially frequent visitor to Spain, Holland, Belgium, France and Italy. Outside Europe he has toured Japan, Taiwan, Canada and Brazil, and future tours take him to Australia, Hong Kong and South America.
As a symphonic conductor Robert King works regularly with orchestras and choirs throughout Europe, and is a guest conductor of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra. In 1992 he made his operatic conducting debuts in Tokyo, Osaka and London. He is particularly acclaimed for his interpretations of the major works of Handel, Bach and Purcell and has made over forty recordings, mainly for the Hyperion label, winning a series of international awards. Away from the podium Robert King is regarded as one of the world's leading experts on the music of Henry Purcell.
