Orchestre National de Jazz

Orchestre National de Jazz

The Orchestre National de Jazz (ONJ) is a French jazz orchestra created in 1986 by the Jack Lang, the then Minister of Culture.

The ONJ is dedicated to the promotion of music outside of the traditional classical repertoire, in particular jazz music. The orchestra is known for its high quality and dynamic performances.

Bassist Daniel Yvinec was appointed artistic director in 2008; he chose to hire ten young instrumentalists who he felt had great potential, rather than ones he was already familiar with. Under Yvinec, the ONJ has performed immensely varied projects, including tributes to Robert Wyatt and Billie Holiday and collaborations with many guest artists.
