The band was founded in 1820 and is located in the fortress Karljohansvern in Horten. It is a modern ensemble, firmly rooted in its military traditions and strongly connected to the local community.
The Royal Norwegian Navy Band's Fireworks Concert opens the annual Vestfold International Festival (Vestfold Festspillene), and over ten thousand people attend the spectacular performance which culminates in Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks.
The band has made several recordings, and in 2003 was awarded Spellemannsprisen, the Norwegian equivalent of the GRAMMY award. Ingar Bergby has been the principal conductor of the band since September 2008, a highly regarded musician who has worked with many national and international professional symphony orchestras and wind orchestras.
