Founded in 1936 as a Fanfare band, Soli Deo is one of the oldest bands in Leeuwarden. In the beginning the band was a member of the Religious Vrije Evangelische Gemeente in Leeuwarden. In addition to competitions, the band played a lot as accompaniment for various religious ceremonies, one of their main activities. From 1956 Sjoerd Nieuwland was the conductor of the band. Under his leadership the band grew with 130 members. The band now had three orchestras, a Fanfare Band, a marching band with drums and cornets and adding later on bagpipers and a students band, and was one of the biggest bands in Friesland. Conductor Sjoerd Nieuwland turned the band into a double occupied Brass Band. Sjoerd Nieuwland was a member of the Salvation Army. Later on The 22 year old conductor Jan de Haan became the leader of the band. Under his leadership the band grew into a high quality Brass band and won many competitions in the Netherlands and abroad. The current conductor is Frans-Aert Burghgraef.
