BBC 'Choice' For Two Linn Recordings

07 July 2016

BBC Music Magazine has named two Linn recordings 'Choice' recordings in the latest issue. Concerti Bizarri by Irish Baroque Orchestra is the Concerto 'Choice' and HMS Pinafore by Scottish Opera and its star-studded cast is the Opera 'Choice'.

Here's what reviewer Paul Riley had to say about Concerti Bizarri

5 stars Performance / 5 stars Sound: 'All in all, this is a glorious opportunity for the musicians of the Irish Baroque Orchestra to take centre stage, and they do so with devil-may-care aplomb. The virtuosic razzle-dazzle of Graupner's C major Bassoon Concerto holds no terrors for Peter Whelan whose awe-inspiring dexterity is also put to good use in the Telemann. Deliciously alert, spirited, and free from affectation, its clarity is beautifully matched by the recording. No wonder Irish eyes are smiling!'

And reviewer Michael Scott Rohan was full of praise for HMS Pinafore.

4 stars Performance / 4 stars Sound: 'Richard Egarr [brings] springy energy to the score and a cast of top-drawer voices headed by Toby Spence's buoyant Ralph Rackstraw and Elizabeth Watts's Josephine, with strong top notes and a pleasantly mischievous touch. Lesser roles are also strong, notably Neal Davies's Dick Deadeye. Andrew Foster-Williams is a sturdy Captain Corcoran, and Hilary Summers, with her resonant dark alto, a striking Buttercup. As a full modern recording without dialogue, this is definitely recommendable.'
