Celebrate international jazz day

30 April 2012

In November 2011, during the UNESCO General Conference, the international community proclaimed 30 April as "International Jazz Day". This International Day is designed to bring together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about the art of jazz, its roots, its future and its impact.

Linn has been a jazz enthusiast since its first signing in 1982, a certain Carol Kidd, which was quickly followed up by signing six-times Jazz Award winner Claire Martin - there's no doubting the jazz credentials of these two ladies!  It seems fitting that Claire Martin's latest album, 'Too Much in Love to Care' featuring Kenny Barron, is released today.

Here are some of our jazz favourites for you to try:

Helge Lien Trio

Helge Lien Trio

Perfectly in tune with each other Helge Lien Trio is a trio from a little nation with a big jazz tradition.  They maintain the balance between jazz traditions and the avantgardist art of improvisation like hardly any other classic piano trio, par excellence. 'Hello Troll' is possibly the best piano trio album ever to come from Norway and won a Norwegian Grammy Award in 2009.  Their follow up, 'Natsukashii', channels the entire breadth of the trio's influences - from classical to jazz and from folk to progressive rock. more...

John Coltrane John Coltrane

John Coltrane, whether as a soloist or with his quartet, is one of the biggest names in jazz.  His anguished tone and multi-noted, rhythmically complex solos with Miles Davis quickly elevated him to the front ranks of jazz.  'A Love Supreme' is generally considered to be among Coltrane's greatest works, whilst 'Africa/Brass' is one of the essential Coltrane albums and 'Ballads' is a classic collection of both well known and obscure ballads. more...
