Linn artists at the Proms
22 April 2009
The BBC Proms are one of the highlights of the classical music season and the 2009 programme is full of concerts that promise memorable performances from some of the top names in classical music. Linn Records artists are well represented with performances from Sir Charles Mackerras, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Ailish Tynan, James Gilchrist, The Sixteen and the Scottish Ensemble.
Sir Charles Mackerras - conductor
Saturday 25 July 2009 (7.30pm)
Royal Albert Hall - Prom 12
Sir Charles Mackerras contrasts Elgar's 'stout and steaky' salute to the indomitable Cockney spirit of old London Town with Delius's poetical evocation of 'the joy and exhilaration one feels in the mountains ... and the grandeur of the wide, far distances', before venturing into the solar system for Holst's mystical planetary survey which, like Delius's hilltop song, memorably deploys a wordless chorus to ethereal effect.

Scottish Ensemble
Monday 10 August 2009 (1.00pm)
Royal Albert Hall - Proms Chamber Music 4
A rich variety of string music spanning three centuries. At this programme's heart is a new piece by John Woolrich, framed by classic works by Mozart and by Purcell, whose imaginative use of form in his Chacony was such an inspiration for Britten's String Quartet No.2. Stravinsky's mercurial Concerto of 1946 casts an ironic eye back to the musical past as it extracts every ounce of colour and contrast from the strings.

The Sixteen
Wednesday 12 August 2009 (9.20pm)
Royal Albert Hall - Prom 36
To celebrate Handel's 250th anniversary, Harry Christophers and The Sixteen intersperse the four glorious anthems that Handel wrote for George II's coronation with other Handelian hits, including extracts from his satirical semi-opera Semele, and the well-known Arrival of the Queen of Sheba from Solomon.
