Classic FM - Gramophone Awards nomination

31 August 2007

Linn Records is thrilled to reveal the Dunedin Consort's celebrated recording, Messiah, as a final nomination for the baroque vocal category for the Classic FM Gramophone Awards 2007.

Shortly after its release in November 2006 the album was hailed "the freshest, most natural, revelatory and transparently joyful Messiah I have heard for a very long time" by Gramophone.

The honour of being named a final nomination in such a prestigious and esteemed event is incredibly exciting and motivating news for both Linn Records and the Dunedin Consort who are to begin recording their next Linn Records release, Bach's St Matthew Passion, on the 1st of September.

The Dunedin Consort's Dublin version of Messiah was Linn's fastest selling album of 2006 and was described in many publications as the top choice Messiah for 2006.  The recording was given four stars by The Times, The Guardian and BBC Music Magazine, chosen as "Album of the Day" on AllMusic.com and selected in The Scotsman's "Top Ten classical music moments of 2006".  You can add your own recommendation on the album page if this album is one your favourites too.

What makes this Messiah so special is that it is the first recording to seriously explore the version and performing forces that Handel used for his legendary Dublin premiere. This unique recording signifies an exciting and historically considered representation of Messiah, which recaptures something of the freshness of the first public performances.

The Dunedin Consort and Linn Records staff are looking forward to the Awards ceremony on 3rd October and we are all hoping that Handel's "Messiah" will be named the winner on the night!
