Sir Charles Mackerras on BBC Radio 3

25 February 2008

On Saturday 23rd February BBC Radio 's CD Review broadcast interviews and rehearsal excerpts from the Mozart Symphonies recording sessions which took place in Glasgow City Halls in August 2007.  Presenter Andrew McGregor travelled to Scotland to sit in on the recording sessions and talk to the main players.

Andrew McGregor introduced the feature by stating that this new recording is sure to feature in quite a lot of "Best of 2008" charts.  Conductor Sir Charles Mackerras, producer James Mallinson and Orchestra members were all interviewed and they provided real insight into every aspect of the recording, which is receiving across the board five star reviews.

Sir Charles explained that although he has recorded these Symphonies before, his approach has since changed and he believes that these are more informed performances (with one of his favourite Orchestra's in the world).  Sir Charles reveals that his recording process is quite democratic and he takes time to listen to the Orchestra's input, although he does always arrive with a clear idea of how the end product should sound and pays particular attention to articulation and phrasing.

You can "listen again" for seven days following the broadcast using the BBC website.  Click the forward 15 minutes icon nine times to find where the feature begins.
