Barb Jungr appears on Woman's Hour
17 August 2007
Barb Jungr appeared on BBC Radio Four's "Woman's Hour" show on Friday 17th August, to talk to host Jenni Murray about her view of women in jazz.
Barb, whom Jenni described as a "creative genre mixer" chatted about her attitude to creating a new 'jazz' version of a contemporary song. Barb says "there is no point in doing a song the way someone has already done it", something anyone who has heard her stylishly re-worked versions of Bob Dylan songs could be in no doubt she achieves. Barb says she does not seek out new songs, rather that "it finds you and you find it".
Barb's trademark humour was in evidence when she discussed what stage tips she had garnered from working with her friends Julian Clary and Mari Wilson. From Julian she learnt the importance of "always coming back on stage with a new outfit on" and from Mari she learnt the necessity of wearing a "stage bra"!
On stage, Barb says her biggest challenge is "always keeping it fresh" and "being in the moment". Barb demonstrated the importance of remaining focused on stage when she gave an impromptu performance of "Trouble in Mind", which is well named as its third verse is particularly wordy, and Barb says she is "never quite sure what will come out" and may improvise on stage.
