Linn Records artists join the sensational line up for the 2007 BBC Proms
09 July 2007
The BBC Proms, ‘The World's Greatest Classical Music Festival', begins on the 13th of July with a season packed with a variety of magnificent concerts. This year's stunning selection of performers features several Linn Records artists. James Gilchrist, whose second solo album with Linn Records is "a deliciously fresh account" (The Scotsman) of works by Vaughan Williams, Bliss, Gurney and Warlock, performs with the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston conducted by Sir Roger Norrington on Monday 23rd July (Prom 14), which will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.
Also broadcast on BBC Radio 3 is a "Baroque feast" performed by The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment on the 23rd of August (Prom 52). The group, who recently celebrated their 21st birthday, released their album of Vivaldi Concerti in 2000 which was named Gramophone "Editor's Choice".
In contrast, Emma Bell will perform Berio and Rossini with Antonio Pappano and his Rome orchestra on the 16th of July (Prom 4). Another soprano who will be performing in this year's Proms is Carolyn Sampson, who, as part of The Sixteen recorded Buxtehude's Membra Jesu Nostri on Linn Records - an album which was named BBC Radio 3's Building a Library's Top Choice in April. Her performance, on the 7th of August (Prom 34), will feature works by J S Bach and will be conducted by Masaaki Suzuki. Both these Proms will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.
Sir Charles Mackerras has collaborated with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra on several Linn Records recordings including the Levin Edition of the Mozart Requiem, which was named a Benchmark Recording by BBC Music Magazine, and Bartok's Divertimento and Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste and Kodaly's Dances of Galánta for which The Sunday Times stated "...their playing here has a virtuosity, a rhythmic élan and a palette of rich orchestral colour to challenge the finest performances". Sir Charles Mackerras will be joining Peter Wiegold and André de Ridder for the Brass Day with the BBC Philharmonic on the 28th of July (Prom 21).
The internationally acclaimed Scottish Ensemble will also be performing in the 2007 Proms (4th of August - Saturday Matinee 2). The dynamic group's recordings with Linn Records have received numerous plaudits including Gramophone praising Tears Of The Angels as "an extremely moving and beautiful disc that should not be missed". In addition, Britten's Les Illuminations was praised by Hi-Fi Choice in their August 2007 edition for beautfully delivering a "massive range of dynamics and colours produced by the instrumental and vocal forces...".
One of Scotland's leading jazz musicians tenor saxophonist Tommy Smith will appear alongside Cleo Laine and Guy Barker on the 8th of August (Prom 35) in an exciting performance which will include works by Ellington, Strayhorn and John Dankworth. Smith's album with Linn Records, The Sound of Love, featured pieces by Ellington and Strayhorn and was praised by Crescendo and Jazz Music as "...timeless jazz music, performed with depth and distinction".
The 2007 Proms promise to be an exciting and memorable occasion presenting an intriguingly varied programme. If you can't make it to the live performances why not enjoy the comprehensive coverage live on BBC Radio 3 which will include all the aforementioned performances or pick up a CD from linnrecords.com.
