Ian Shaw Scoops BBC Jazz Award

16 July 2007

Ian Shaw has scooped the Best Vocalist prize at the 2007 BBC Jazz Awards. The other two nominees were label-mate Claire Martin and recent MBE recipient Norma Winstone.

Following the release of his album "Drawn to All Things" (Linn AKD 276) in April 2006, Ian has toured extensively across the UK and Europe. His reworking of the Joni Mitchell songbook has proved his most popular release to date. He gave a "virtuoso performance" (The Observer) of her song A Case of You at the awards ceremony with the BBC Big Band, conducted by Guy Barker.

It is the second time Ian has received this particular award - he also won it in 2004.

The star-studded awards ceremony took place at The Mermaid Theatre in London where established artists like Martin Taylor, "just about the best jazz guitarist in the world at present" (The Observer) and Madeleine Peyroux shared the stage with upcoming talents like Finn Peters and Neil Cowley. A particular highlight was the Lifetime Achievement Award winner Dave Brubeck performing via satellite with the aforementioned BBC Big Band. Awards were handed out by one-time Rolling Stones member Bill Wyman, actor Richard E Grant and former general secretary of the transport and General Workers Union Lord Morris.

Recent months have seen Ian collaborate with a number of revered artists in a live setting as well as successful appearances at the Sunset Club in Paris. He is in constant demand as a tutor to vocalists in both jazz and mainstream pop including a raft of household names.

He is now concentrating on preparing for his follow-up album on Linn Records - please keep checking our website news section for exclusive further details on this highly-anticipated forthcoming project.
