Messiah wins second award
31 January 2008
Linn Records is thrilled to reveal a second success for the celebrated recording of Handel's Messiah (Dublin Version, 1742). The Dunedin Consort's critically acclaimed disc has been awarded the Baroque Music Award at the Midem Classical Awards 2008. This triumph continues the success of the group, who, in 2007 were presented the Baroque Vocal Classic FM Gramophone Award for their recreation of the work's first public performance in 1742.
John Butt, director of the Dunedin Consort, said, "I'm absolutely delighted that this recording has been so well received. There was always a risk in trying to recreate something of the spirit of a specific performance, with some unusual versions and a balance of soloists and chorus quite unlike most recordings of Messiah. But we were exceptionally fortunate in having our very best performers and, of course, the superlative sound and production of Linn. In all, a tribute to all those supporters who thought it worth sponsoring this recording - their generous hunch has certainly paid off."
The Dunedin Consort will release their next recording with Linn Records in Easter 2008. Bach's
Matthew Passion is the much anticipated follow-up by the Consort; a recording which promises to be as memorable as
Messiah.
