Mitsuko Uchida explores some of Schumann's  lesser known piano works. The post-Classical Sonata No. 2 in G minor wedged in between the glorious 'Waldszenen' ('Forest Scenes' Op. 82) and the 'Fünf Gesänge der Frühe' ('Five Songs of the Dawn' Op. 133).

The post-Classical Sonata No. 2 in G minor shows how the form was so well suited Schumann. Short-breathed and explosive, the work speaks more to Schumann's impulsive temperament than to any sustained thought or formal development. Still, it offers ample scope for virtuosity, which Ms. Uchida supplies in full.

Where she really excels is in the more pictorial and concrete 'Waldszenen' and the more abstract and elusive 'Gesänge'. The 'Waldszenen' is especially remarkable. The modest journey from the simple song of the "Entrance," over a few colorful scenes of hunting, haunting, flowers (lonely) and birds (prophetic), to the achingly melancholic "Farewell" seemed instead epic.

'[Uchida] always hears the music in Schumann's bravura... Schumann the poet and virtuoso evoked in perfect balance'. Sunday Times
