'It is easy to see why Chandos have signed an exclusive deal with this ensemble. On one hand, the four musicians of the Doric String Quartet demonstrate their individual virtuosic class, whilst on the other they harmonise as an ensemble in such a way that is seldom heard on recordings.' magazin.klassik.com
'The Doric Quartet, in these superb performances (enhanced by the rich, crystal-clear recording), play them as if they were established repertoire works, which they deserve to be.'
The Sunday Times
The Doric String Quartet bring their undeniable empathy and chemistry to the fierce, rhythmical and intense works of Korngold.
In the first quartet, they add a brightness and elegance to the opening movement with a delicateness which continues throughout. The second quartet which was unheard in the UK until 1997 was composed directly before Korngold's first visit to Hollywood in 1933 and conjures visions of the countryside of Austria, Korngold's homeland, while similarly reflecting a truly Viennese ripeness. The third quartet comprises of themes from Korngold's film scores which were written during his American exile in 1944 when his father's health began to fail.
