Recorded in the remarkable Palatine Basilica of Santa Barbara, the award-winning Odhecaton Ensemble for Ancient Music performs a number excellently arranged works by Claudio Monteverdi and Giaches de Wert.

This album is licensed for download from Ricercar.

‘The interpretation is brilliant, not only of the music by Monteverdi, but also of the motets by Wert and Gombert which are outstanding in their own right.' MusicWeb International

‘A strong selling point for the album is the inclusion of the premiere recordings of three Monteverdi motets that had only recently been identified as his work when this recording was made. They are in the more personal, intensely expressive style that characterizes his mature work.' AllMusic.com

The lives Claudio Monteverdi and Giaches de Wert, the two composers whose music makes up the major part of this recording, overlapped in the 1590s, when both were in the service of the Gonzaga family in Mantua. Moreover, the music presented here was almost certainly originally written for the same remarkable institution, the Palatine Basilica of Santa Barbara, which had been constructed over a ten-year period beginning in the late 1560s.

This recording was made inside this church, using not only the West gallery (mentioned by contemporaries as being used by the musicians of the cappella), but also the two cantorie which stand halfway down the nave, in one of which is preserved the organ constructed by Costanzo Antegnati in 1565.
