Herbert von Karajan

Herbert von Karajan was perhaps most famously associated with the Berlin Philharmonic, of which he was principal conductor for 35 years. He is generally considered to have been one of the greatest conductors of all time, and he was a dominant figure in European classical music from the 1960s until his death.

Although Karajan recorded Don Quixote on several occasions this DG Originals version with cellist Pierre Fournier is widely recognised as his finest. Strauss' characterization is perfectly executed, the orchestra and Fournier paint a vivid picture of Cervantes' legendary knight. This performance ranks as one of Karajan's greatest achievements.

'Fournier is in superb form . . . he can be wonderfully tender, as he is here with violist Giusto Cappone, again the perfect foil as Sancho . . . [Karajan]: at this stage in his career, his Strauss performances also exhibit a rare warmth and humanity.
