In his Deutsche Grammophon orchestral recording debut, Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads The Philadelphia Orchestra in a tribute to the ensemble's storied past while looking toward a bright future. Recorded at the Kimmel Center, the album features Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, which Stokowski and the Orchestra premiered in the US in 1922, and Stokowski's transcriptions of works by Bach and Stravinsky.

One century on, the score of The Rite of Spring casts an ever-lengthening shadow. While Nijinsky's choreography celebrated weight and angularity rather than lightness and grace, Stravinsky's dark timbres and violent syncopations had a no less revolutionary impact.

For conductors, the work has become also a rite of passage, yet Yannick Nézet-Séguin took it up relatively late in his own musical life. 'Unlike most conductors of my generation,' he says, 'I was not attracted to it as a teenager-I was much more interested in the German Romantics. I liked its power and rawness, but it didn't particularly speak to me. I conducted it for the first time in 2009, and even then only because I was asked to. But I found the experience overwhelming-it's no exaggeration to say that it puts performers and conductors in danger. You must not miss a beat, or fall into the cracks, or play the rests. And it gives you more adrenaline than any other piece I know.'

'...this is a thrilling, gloriously played performance' - International Record Review

 - Outstanding Recording

'. . . its quality will put it at the top of the heap . . . Nézet-Séguin has a keen sense of contour, of well-judged peaks and valleys, as well as a coloristic precision that reveals the individual nature of each moment. Repeated listenings uncover new things . . . as much as Nézet-Séguin keeps excitement under control, he saves his most savage outburst the way one plays a trump card. The timpani eruption that ushers in "The Naming of the Chosen One" is perhaps the most emphatic on record'. Philadelphia Inquirer
