This album combines the works of two of the biggest names in Russian music with three less well known Russian composers, and Lydia Mordkovich plays all of these with real empathy and flair. This very personal selection of violin and viola works combines flawless technique with a powerful and undeniably Russian feel.

Including the premiere recording of Volkonsky's Sonata for violin and piano as well as the only available recordings of Khanoshkin's Sonata for solo violin and Prokofiev's five pieces from Cinderella, this is Lydia Mordkovitch's first recording for Chandos on violin. There are four scores for violin and piano, another for solo violin as well as one for viola and piano. When these pieces call for a pianist, she is joined by Julian Milford and Nicholson Walker. 

This album will appeal to collectors looking for rarer Russian composers as well as the better-known repertoire for which Lydia Mordkovitch is widely recognised.
