Gerard Presencer - The Optimist - Inverness Courier

23 March 2001
Inverness Courier

At home in any style, the young English trumpeter returns to the funky dance grooves of his Linn debut, "Platypus", with six finger-snapping, toe-tapping, hip-shaking originals and John Coltrane's "Countdown" which is given similar treatment. John Parricelli's guitar and Jim Watson's keyboards add to the contemporary feel and Jacqueline Dankworth provides a welcome vocal interlude on "Nothing Changes". Okay, so it's not profound but it's beautifully crafted and re-asserts jazz's original function as dance music
