Robin Ticciati & SCO - Schumann: The Symphonies - BBC Radio 3 'CD Review Building a Library'

From 48:58

Several recent recordings combine modern instruments in a period flavour. Based on a smallish-string section, playing with lighter articulations and sparing vibrato...Robin Ticciati with the finely responsive Scottish Chamber Orchestra has more romantic instincts. In the first movement he's more inclined than either [Dausgaard and Nezet-Seguin] to bend the tempo, usually with convincing effect. At the start of the coda, the woodwinds gently hint at the introduction's chorale theme. Schumann then vanishes this fleeting moment of nostalgia by surging ahead to a final ringing statement of the brass moto. He marks this closing section con fuoco (firely), implying an uping of intensity, perhaps of pace too. Many traditional performances seem to ignore this, not Ticciati and his eager Scottish forces.

Robin Ticciati and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Firery and impulsive with the close of the first movement...
