'...what is a very good example of John Butt's marriage between arresting scholarship, enormous musicality - the tempi are so naturally right - and pragmatic skills: conceiving and bringing such a complex production to fruition is a huge task, and the whole disc is so coherently musical from the word go. Give it to all your friends for Christmas: this is contextual Bach at its very best.'

Dunedin Consort - J.S. Bach: Magnificat - Pizzicato

17 December 2015
Pizzicato
Alain Steffen

Here we have J.S. Bach's Magnificat heard within its original liturgical context, alongside the beautiful Christmas Cantata and other pieces, superbly performed. The recorded sound is outstanding.

Google Translation:

John Butt and his 'Dunedin Consort' here provide a high-profile reconstruction of Bach's first Christmas Vespers on 25 December 1723 in the St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig. The program then stood a motet by Giovanni Gabrieli and Johann Sebastian Bach Cantata 'Christen ätzet this day' BWV 63 and the Magnificat BWV243a. Some small pieces and chorals organ completed the program.

Thanks to a very classy, ??but always vibrant Play this SACD is an event. The recording engineers managed a masterpiece: the sound is very spatially but also very dynamic and transparent. It happens rarely that organ, orchestra, choir and soloists are so natural and balanced captured, as here. Forgotten are often thin, lifeless recordings of Bach's works, which negatively distinguished already Gardiners recording. Here it comes down to business, and the guaranteed Klangfetischist comes at his expense.

John Butt, of both the organ part takes over, as well as its excellent 'Dunedin Consort' stylish and clearly directs, knows exactly where he wants to go. The vocal soloists Julia Doyle and Joanne Lunn, soprano Clare Wilkinson, Mezzo, Nicholas Mulroy, tenor and Matthew Brook, bass-baritone possess all high level and fit seamlessly in Butts Bach concept. Everything has been well prepared, so this Christmas reconstruction comes uncommonly freely and spontaneously. The handset may therefore enjoy an equally interpretive how receptive technically perfect shot. Our tip for the holidays!
