...the performance is largely excellent, and more than a match for classic recordings conducted by Isidore Godfrey (Pearl) and Charles Mackerras (Telarc). Here the Baroque specialist Richard Egarr wields the baton, providing himself a natural for this repertoire: the whole thing bounces and sparkles and smiles, with Scottish Opera's orchestra playing with the insouciant grace that is such a crucial element of operetta style.

The cast is splendid...Elizabeth Watts is a gorgeous Josephine, Andrew Foster-Williams makes a perfectly proper Captain Corcoran and Hilary Summers warm contralto is nicely suites to Little Buttercup. It's a luxury to have singers of the stature of Kitty Whately, Neal Davies, Gavan Ring and Barnaby Rea lower down the ranks, and the chorus is exemplary. Sullivan's fans will be well satisfied...
