Aliens - Luna - The Sunday Times

The Aliens guitarist Gordon Anderson's career has been interrupted by mental-health problems, so it's heartening to find his band following up their wonderful debut album, 2007's Astronomy for Dogs, so promptly - suggesting that the three former Beta Band members have created an environment where their distinctive psychedelia can be safely and productively nurtured. They've certainly got a freedom to manoeuvre that they wouldn't have had on their former label, EMI, as proven by the opening track, Bobby's Song, which meanders through 10 minutes and countless musical styles. Key influences seem to be Syd Barrett, Brian Wilson, Scary Monsters-era Bowie and White Album Beatles, but any given 30 seconds of this album throws up half a dozen more. Luna is ambitious, challenging and unfocused - but in a good way.
