Tag bare J.S. Bachs vældige passion over Matthæusevangeliet - den fantastiske historie om Jesu sidste stund: Det er drama på drama, den ene uforglemmelige melodi efter den anden, gyset ved frelsermandens tunge vej fra hudfletning til korsdød. Holdt genialt ved lige gennem næsten tre timer.

Men hvordan skal man synge den: Skal det for eksempel være med et kor på flere hundrede eller bare en enkelt sanger på hver af de to gange fire stemmer? J.S. Bach selv prøvede lidt af hvert. Han opførte sit værk for Leipzigs lykkelige menighed mindst tre gange - nemlig i påsken 1727, 1736 og 1742. Noderne til den sidste opførelse er bevaret. Og af dem kan man se, han foretrak den tynde udgave med kun otte sangere i alt.

Så det gør briten John Butt og hans herlige Dunedin Consort & Players fra Edinburgh også. Alligevel skal man lede længe efter en flottere indspilning. Thi jo færre medvirkende, desto bedre kan alle være med på dirigentens ideer. Hvad man ikke får af massive råb fra folkedybet, hentes ind af alles kælen for alle detaljer:

Musikerne spiller som en drøm. Nicholas Mulroy i fortællerens vigtige rolle synger, som om han selv hører til de troende. Og så er bassen Matthew Brook en Jesus af de allermest magtfulde. Tag bare hans indstiftelse af nadveren, »Drik alle deraf«! Sikken overraskende folkelighed.

Well, well ... De gode skotter ku' godt have skottet lidt mere i bogen med tysk udtale. Og måske har John Butt en smule for mange ideer. Som når afstanden mellem de to kor hele tiden skal slås fast med syvtommersøm - undskyld udtrykket.

Men alt i alt en Matthæuspassion, der vinder over de fleste. Endda fra uventet kant.
