Dvorak - Schidlof Quartet - What's On In London

01 June 1999
What's On In London

Two of Dvorak's best-loved chamber works are recorded here by the Schidlof Quartet with Martin Roscoe, piano, playing the piano Quintet in A and the String Quartet in F, the 'American'. The first combines tender melancholy with lively Czech dances and sunny good humour, while the second is perhaps his most famous work, inspired by and written during his stay in America in the early 1890s. The disc affords a perfect introduction for anyone new to Dvorak as these refreshing new interpretations will delight devotees of his music. Now in their sixth season, the Schidlof Quartet has been heralded by the Daily Telegraph as 'one of the most accomplished to have emerged in the last decade.' Their recording of Shostakovich chamber works (Linn Records; CKD 065) received outstanding critical acclaim and was chosen as Critic's Choice in The Sunday Times, the Sunday Telegraph and BBC Music Magazine.
