Shock! - Gareth Williams Power Trio - FT

31 March 2009
FT

A power trio usually conjures metallic rhythms and full-force feedback, but pianist Williams references the supple, funk-tinged electric jazz of the 1980s and the acoustic piano impressionism of the late Bill Evans - "Evans the Piano" is a well-worked tribute. There is one cover - John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" trickily refigured to feature Williams in full flight - and 12 fine-crafted originals that mix light-fingered funk, riffy swing and ballads with ease and elegance.
