The Nightingale and the Butterfly - Pamela Thorby & Elizabeth Kenny - Scotland on Sunday

Recorder music is music of the summer; it's hard to listen to it in the autumn or winter without feeling a slight chill. Which is odd, given that the recorder has a more full-bodied sound than its cousin the flute.

This selection of works by French composers, performed by Pamela Thorby with Elizabeth Kenny on archlute, theorbo and baroque guitar, doesn't intend to suggest cold weather, however; it was a popular instrument in its day for amateurs, as well as being used in theatre and opera.

François Couperin's transcriptions for recorder add to a relatively limited solo repertoire, but all are well worth hearing.
