Classical Opera Company - Artaxerxes - Gramophone (Super Audio Corner)

08 March 2011
Gramophone - Super Audio Corner
Andrew Everard

The 2010 Gramophone Label of the Year continues to surprise and delight with its choice of catalogue. Here we have a glowing account of Thomas Arne's "lost" opera, reconstructed by Duncan Druce and Ian Page, and available in formats from MP3 to studio master downloads, and as a two-disc SACD/CD hybrid.

The performance is thrilling, with exemplary singing and playing served well by an atmospheric, involving surround mix on the SACD layer of the discs, and the kind of crystalline clarity we've come to expect from the Linn label.
