Le vénérable et sémillant octogénaire Sir Charles demeure l'un des grands mozartiens de notre temps. Ses premiers enregistrements avec le Philharmonique de Londres (EMI) osaient une formation symphonique en rangs clairsemés (quelques symphonies furent enregistrées avec l'English Chamber Orchestra - ASV) et son intégrale avec l'Orchestre de chambre de Prague (Telarc, 1991) demeure essentielle dans la compréhension, la reconstruction d'un autre Mozart, si proche de l'esprit du théâtre, enfin débarrassé de ses atours apolliniens. Ces nouvelles gravures constituent une nouvelles étape de l'art du chef australien. Ceux qui attendaient une rencontre explosive, très Sturm und Drang seront désappointés car catte ultime lecture est absolument...classique. Proche de l'esthétique d'un Muti (les ritardendos!), un Mozart aux lignes pures, sans aspérités, vêtu de beaux habits sans un pli. Le ton employé est inattendu: grandiloquent at puissant, au visage marmoréen d'un commandeur mais doté, toutefois, du caractère incisif et alerte, sans rejoindre l'aspect folle journée et Sinfonias d'opéras d'un René Jacobs (Harmonia Mundi).

Les introductions aux rythmes pointées des K.504 et 543 impressionnent par leur majesté. Le ton sérieux des mouvements initiaux fait songer à la gravité d'un Beethoven, à l'exemple du Molto Allegro de la Quarantième et de son développement guerrier ou de la "valse" polie de la K.543 (sans évoquer la conclusion titanesque de la "Jupiter"). Dans les mouvements lents, Mackerras mâitrise parfaitement la rhétorique mozartienne; entre affirmation virile et phrases délicates. Mais de ces scènes nocturnes échappées de l'opéra, entre pantomime et doux sentiments, nous aurions aimé plus de couleurs, de nuances, d'intentions dirigées vers cette délicate notion de grâce mozartienne. Au final, tout en savourant la parfaite réalisation technique, nous avouons regretter l'enthousiasme et l'invention qui surgissaient de ses gravures praguoises.
