Gramophone Critics name John Passion their pick of 2013

In Gramophone's round-up of 2013's best recordings the Dunedin Consort's gripping John Passion is chosen by two critics: Lindsay Kemp and Caroline Gill.  The recording caused a stir upon its release as it placed Bach's great masterpiece within its original liturgical context for the first time.  Gramophone also named it their 'Record of the Month' and a 'Finalist' at the 2013 Awards.

Explaining why she chose John Passion Caroline states: 'John Butt's limitless wit and invention with Bach create an immediacy that makes it feel completely new.  Hearing one of Bach's great masterworks for the first time, again, is the most joyous experience.'

Lindsay had no trouble making her decision: 'It was easy for me this year.  John Butt's fresh, supple, humane and beautifully contextualised recording of Bach's John Passion with the Dunedin Consort really did make me see the work anew, raising my respect and love for it to even greater heights. How many recordings can do that?'
