La Resurrezione Is Gramophone's Recording Of The Month

Gramophone's June issue has awarded the coveted 'Recording of the Month' accolade to The English Concert and Harry Bicket for their outstanding performance of Handel's La Resurrezione.

The editor summed up the reason why it stood head and shoulders above the other recordings:

"Handel’s operatic Easter oratorio gets a beautifully elegant reading from Harry Bicket, who leads an excellent English Concert and a superb all-British set of soloists in this truly wonderful recording."

The reviewer, Richard Wigmore, highlighted the role of the cast in the recording's success:

"Iestyn Davies sings the castrato role of Mary Cleophas with his familiar refined artistry ... Lucy Crowe sings with grace and jewelled precision as the Angel, soaring joyously into the stratosphere. Her bright timbre contrasts ideally with the warmer-toned Sophie Bevan as the sorrowing Mary Magdalene. Bevan’s tenderly shaped and coloured ‘Ferma l’ali’ and ‘Per me già di morire’, exquisitely complemented by the orchestra, are expressive highlight."
