Hue and Cry - Next Move - Scotland On Sunday

The Kane brothers continue their foray into "jazznotjazz" territory with their accomplished if overly fiddly 10th album. Eighties single Labour of Love remains one of that rare species, an intelligent and infectious hit - a pop peak that hindsight suggests came too early in their career. Reinventing themselves as jazz-pop fusion artists, the brothers finally seem comfortable with the music they are making. Pat Kane's voice remains a powerful instrument, always more Bobby Dairn than Frank Sinatra, but occasionally judgment is flawed on song selection. They may have used Prince's Kiss as a rabble-rousing cover when supporting Madonna at Wembley Stadium 12 years ago but Sign O' The Times was a bad idea. Happily that is an exception to the "Next Move's" jazzy rule.
