Magnificat - Schütz: Cantiones sacrae - Hi-Fi Choice
Magnificat is the name of Philip Cave's ensemble of six voices and five instrumentalists. Together they give a splendid performance of Schütz's collection of 41 motets, published in 1625 as Cantiones sacrae. Singing is stylish, confident, clean and focussed, but occasionally there could be better integration, balance and sense of ensemble to the voices. The recording has excellent purity and clarity, and beautiful reverberation. These days finding an ideally quiet recording venue is a near impossible task and a rather high level of background rumble is heard, changes in which are audible at edit-points.
