Mozart Symphonies - SCO & Sir Charles Mackerras - The SCOTS Magazine

This is a fairly old recording (2007) but still deserves a mention, not just for the fine playing involved but because of the artistes. Sir Charles Mackerras and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra were one of the great combinations of this century and before, collaborating in performance and recording right up to Sir Charles' death in the summer of last year. Performances
and recordings of Mozart Symphonies 40 and 41 are not rare, likewise the "Prague", number 38. But to have all three together with the almost forgotten E flat major number 39 is a great boon, and the recording was good enough to win Critics' Choice Award at the 2009 Classical Brit Awards. Little need be said about this compilation except that it is orchestra and conductor at their very best, and even if you have a number of recordings of this late Mozart four-some, this one definitely merits a place in your collection as a lasting momento of a tremendous association.
