The Orchestra of the Americas - Pan-American Reflections - Classical CD Choice

There was a time when Copland’s epic Third Symphony was known only through Leonard Bernstein’s pioneering performance. These days, listeners have a variety of choices – the piece has (since Bernstein’s reading) been very lucky on disc. This latest recording finds all the dramatic Americana of Copland’s writing, notably the famous peroration at the climax stunningly using the composer’s calling card Fanfare for the Common Man. Prieto’s expansive recording is splendid and wide-ranging. Chavez’s short Second Symphony, the ‘Sinfonia India’, makes for a very agreeable coupling.
