Phantasm - Dowland: Lachrimae - The Sunday Times

John Dowland's 1604 collection of 21 pavanes, galliards and other pieces for five-part viol consort with obbligato lute seems appropriate material for our distracted times - even if only the first seven, all melancholic pavanes based on the same four-note formula, are individually labelled "Lachrimae" (tears). The performances are elegant, rich-textured and beautifully phrased. Affecting.
