Trumpet Masque - Jonathan Freeman-Attwood - The Herald

This one will have the purists charging like lemmings to the nearest precipice. If it had less integrity, you would say it was off the wall. Trumpeter Jonathan Freeman-Attwood and pianist-arranger Daniel-Ben Pienaar have reimagined a stream of early music pieces for solo trumpet and modern concert grand piano. The music has been gently levered out of its court or churchly context and transformed into dazzling, stunningly articulate and soulful duets for piano and trumpet. Composers range from Monteverdi, Couperin and Biber to Biber to Purcell and Lully. Last call to the lemmings as they fall: never mind the context - this is beautifully-played music, defining its own terms.
