Verdelot - Catherine King and Jacob Heringman - A Renaissance Songbook - Sunday Herald

John Dowland may be the most famous exponent of the lute song from these shores, but when it comes to composers whose brilliance has been lost in the midst of time, then Italian Phillipe Verdelot is one such name. Verdelot was arguably the first master of the Florentine madrigal, and his entire collection from 1536 is sung in all its beauty in this recording. Jacob Heringman excels on the lute, while tenor Charles Daniels demonstrates superior vocal dexterity. But above all soprano Catherine King's velvety voice strokes and caresses every musical phrase with a beauty which takes your breath away.
