Barb Jungr

On stage she’s a lioness' Sydney Morning Herald

With rave international reviews and two prestigious New York Awards (2008 Nightlife Award for Outstanding Cabaret Vocalist and Best International Artist 2003 Backstage Award), Barb Jungr is renowned for her unique vocal style, interpretation of song and radical approach to arrangements. Her acclaimed releases on Linn and Naim as well as her ‘revelatory’ live performances have brought her to audiences all around the world. In 2015 she won the Broadway World Best CD Award for Hard Rain - The Songs of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen.

In January of 2016 Jungr appeared in New York’s Lincoln Centre in the ‘Peggy Lee Songbook’ Series. 2016 also sees the spring release of Shelter From The Storm - Songs of Hope for Troubled Times on Linn, featuring the virtuosic contemporary jazz pianist and USA Grammy Award winning Laurence Hobgood. Jungr tours to support the release with four London dates at the central London jazz venue, Pizza Express, Soho. The American release of the CD will be launched over four nights at Joe’s Pub in Manhattan in May. As well as performing her other repertoire across the country, in April she performs in Michael Childers’ bi-annual star-studded show One Night Only at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, California, performing a Stephen Sondheim song for Musical Director John McDaniel. Jungr and McDaniel continue to tour their Come Together - Barb Jungr and John McDaniel perform the Beatles collection on both sides of the Atlantic throughout the year with a season at Crazy Coqs Cabaret and Jazz Club, London in late June.

2015 saw Jungr return to Connecticut’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre Centre’s Cabaret Conference as a guest artist where she launched Come Together - Barb Jungr and John McDaniel perform The Beatles. Jungr and US Grammy and Emmy Award winner McDaniel appeared at the Edinburgh International Festival; meanwhile Jungr toured her Linn collections Chanson: The Space In Between and Love Me Tender, alongside her Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen interpretations. In July she recorded her eighth recording for Linn in New York, in collaboration with Grammy Award winning US pianist Hobgood.

In March 2014 Jungr released Hard Rain - The Songs of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen produced by Simon Wallace on her own Kristalyn label through Absolute Marketing and toured the UK. Garnering four and five star reviews for this collection and live shows, she returned to Connecticut for the O’Neill Cabaret Conference in late July as a guest mentor and performer. She appeared in a sell-out two week season of Hard Rain at 59E59 Theatre, New York and a week at Crazy Coqs in London in autumn 2014, alongside continuing a national tour. In August of this year, Jungr was a featured artist in collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Corby musicians and singers in the Deep Roots Tall Trees project, of which she is artistic director and a project for which she continues to work.

Her extensive radio and TV appearances in the UK include BBC Radio 4’s ‘Start The Week’, ‘A Good Read’, ‘Saturday Review’, ‘Front Row’ and ‘Saturday Live’ and on BBC4 TV, both as a performer and expert on Piaf, Nina Simone and the voice.
Born and raised in Rochdale and Stockport, UK, Jungr has worked with many of the finest musicians and composers in the UK (including Mark Anthony Turnage who wrote ‘About Water’ for her to sing at the re-opening of The London South Bank with the London Sinfonietta). She has toured all over the world (Malawi, Cameroon, Yemen, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Côte d'Ivoire, Sudan), appeared in Australia as part of a sell-out tour in 2010 and 2013, toured across Norway and Holland and performs regularly in New York and all across the United States.

‘One of the best interpreters of Jacques Brel and Bob Dylan anywhere on this angst ridden planet today’ (Village Voice, New York) and ‘one of the best nightclub singers in the world’ (Time Out New York), Jungr is ‘a fearless iconoclast who dives into the deepest waters of popular song to wrest exotic treasure from the ocean floor’ (The New York Times). Her earlier Dylan collection, Barb Jungr Sings Bob Dylan: Every Grain of Sand (Linn Records 2002), which the Wall Street Journal called ‘The most significant vocal album of the 21st century thus far’, is now regarded as a cult classic album.

‘Arguably the finest cabaret singer in recent times, Barb Jungr’s album Chanson: The Space In Between (Linn) shows real soul: it’s quirky, intelligent cabaret music of the highest order’ (The Rough Guide To Cult Pop, 2003).
