Scottish Ensemble - Tavener: Tears of the Angel - Northern Echo

10 September 1998
Northern Echo
Dave Robson

Three John Tavener works, all performed by Clio Gould with her BT Scottish Ensemble, makes for an event to be welcomed heartily. His latest work, premiered only in June by the BTSE, Depart in Peace is a Haunting setting of the Nunc Dimittis words and beautifully sung in Greek by Patricia Rozario. My Gaze Is Ever With You is for violin solo and pre-recorded tape.

It is his Tears Of The Angels for violin and strings that I found particularly moving. A prayer, dedicated to the suffering people of Bosnia, its haunting, gentle and emotionally intense course is traced with great compassion as Clio Gould's solo soars over the ensembles strings.
