'Tenor James Gilchrist and pianist Anna Tilbrook allow each cycle to unfold naturally, minutely adjusting the spaces between certain songs to allow the ear to absorb what it has just heard...If Gilchrist and Tilbrook have waited a long time to record these works, their perspective on Dichterliebe, poignant, reflective and weather-worn, has only deepened.'

Tonal beauty and lyricism characterize James Gilchrist's almost perfect Schumann performances. Though some people might prefer a more dramatic reading, this album has definitely to be counted among the best Schumann Lied recordings currently available.

Google Translation:

James Gilchrist with wonderful Schumann

The English tenor James Gilchrist has one of the finest lyric tenors, I know. How Pears, Tear, Padmore or Bostridge he represents the typical English Singing school, which is less directly or accent rich than the German or Austrian. The listener experiences here Schumann three great song cycles 'song cycle' Op. 24 & Op. 39 and 'Poet's Love' op. 48 in a nearly perfect interpretation. However Gilchrist sings almost too lyrical. Sometimes you would have a bit more hardness and narrative character desired. But where it comes to feel in colors and shades, we are witnessing a feat of singing culture, style of interpretation and vocal beauty. Who indeed the English style of interpretation in Schumann not so much like, which will have its difficulties with this CD.

is accompanied Gilchrist of his longtime accompanist Anna Tilbrook whose game bears the tenor on hands and quasi seeks a complete symbiosis with Gilchrist interpretation and voice. Again, we would have liked a little more individuality. But anyway: The recording one of my favorites at the best and most beautiful that there are on the CD market.
