'There are few, if any, finer jazz singers than Claire Martin. She's certainly the best the U.K. has produced, with her cunning mix of straight-ahead purity and interpretive legerdemain...There's an impressive bigness to their sound, mirroring the thunderous showmanship of Prima with Keely Smith.'

Claire Martin & Ray Gelato - We've Got A World That Swings - InTune International

01 July 2016
InTune International
Allen Pollock

Changing the mood, Claire Martin joined forces with tenor saxophonist/singer Ray Gelato, aided by David Newton (piano), Dave Whiteford (double bass) and Sebastian de Krom (drums and percussion) to action a clutch of swingers - mainly from the more edgy and energised pages of the Great American Songbook - in keeping with the album's upbeat title and its dedication to the great Mark Murphy. MORE THAN YOU KNOW highlights Claire's solo vocal style in fine fashion and she obviously enjoys her encounters with Gelato on his composed A SWINGIN' AFFAIR plus C'EST SI BON, THIS COULD BE THE ST ART OF SOMETHING BIG and the title number, with his vocals brightly shot through with gravelly enthusiasm and saxy moments maybe brought to ultimate boil with the pair's revival of Charlie Parker's celebrated jazz classic ORNITHOLOGY. One to share for its toe-tapping rhythm and joi-de-vive!
