In The Studio: Magnificat

Having already recorded Josquin's Miserere, on its critically-acclaimed recording Scattered Ashes, Magnificat returns under the direction of Philip Cave to present the first of two projects dedicated to the composer’s 500th anniversary in 2021. The first recording in Magnificat’s ‘Josquin Legacy’ series sees the ensemble reunited with His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts to perform sacred works by Josquin and his Renaissance contemporaries from the Franco-Flemish school.

Magnificat’s performance of the motet Miserere mei, Deus prompted Early Music Review to describe it as “the best performance on disc of a motet by Josquin”, which certainly whets the appetite for this new recording which is all based on Josquin's Benedicta es caelorum regina. In addition to his motet, Magnificat have recorded a mass based on it by de Monte; a Magnificat based on it by Lassus; and a version of the motet with six extra "si placet" parts added by Castileti.
